Vitra

We took a short city break to the Swiss city of Basle, although the main objective of the trip was just across the border in the South of Germany: the Vitra-campus in Weil am Rhein. Vitra is a Swiss family-owned furniture company. It is the manufacturer of the works of many internationally renowned furniture designers. Vitra is also known for the works of notable architects that make up its premises in Weil am Rhein, in particular the Vitra Design Museum. This museum has been designed by Frank Gehry. We have admired the work of Gehry earlier in Bilbao (the Guggenheim), the Rioja region (hotel Marqués de Riscal) and in Prague, the Dancing House (see older posts in my blog). The Vitra Design museum hosted an exhibition of the renowed designer Alexander Girard. Another spectacular building on the campus is the Vitra house, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opened in 2010 as the company’s flagship store and home of the Vitra Home Collection. Click on the photo to get access to two more photos of this trip, of which one is a painting of dolls designed by Alexander Girard.
